About Prasiolite
Prasiolite, also referred to as green amethyst, is a type of quartz that ranges in color from yellow-green to green. It sometimes forms naturally, but it is most often produced synthetically. This gemstone occurs when natural amethyst is subjected to intense heat or radiation. It forms naturally when an amethyst-bearing rock is heated by lava flows. Most examples of it, however, are synthetically created by heating amethyst to about 500 degrees Celsius. It can also be produced by irradiating amethyst.
While often referred to as green amethyst because it is made from heated or irradiated amethyst, this name is a bit of a misnomer. By definition, amethyst is a purple type of quartz. As a result, calling prasiolite “green amethyst” is a contradiction of terms. In July 2018, the Federal Trade Commission even weighed in on the issue, stating that the name “green amethyst” is incorrect and can be misleading, deceptive and unfair. Many still refer to the stone as green amethyst but, we make it a point to clarify what this stone has been officially labeled as.
There are only a few mines in the world where there are deposits of amethyst that turn into prasiolite when heated. Most is produced by heating amethyst mined from the Montezuma deposit in Minas Gerais, Brazil. There is also a deposit in Arizona containing amethyst that can be heat-treated to create prasiolite.
Natural prasiolite is rare, but there is a deposit in Susanville, California. Deposits have also been found in Poland, Canada, Namibia, Tanzania and Zambia.
Holistic Aspects
Prasiolite is thought to amplify the energies inside your heart and mind. It is a stone of originality and may inspire you to share your unique gifts and talents with the world. It also believed to contain energies of courage, and when you have it working for you, you may find that no problem is too large to overcome. It can help you become more self-reliant and feel capable of getting yourself out of a difficult situation.
If you need to bring prosperity and luck into your life, consider the lore around prasiolite. This stone is believed to attract wealth and abundance while helping you manifest your goals and keeping you motivated. It can clear your mind and enable you to find new opportunities.
This gemstone is thought to have physical healing properties, too. It is seen as a natural detoxifier and thought to help cleanse the body. It may also help with nutrient absorption and neutralize stomach acid.
Wearing this powerful stone keeps its energies close to your auric field and makes you more likely to experience its many benefits. Wearing it as a necklace or earrings keeps it close to your crown, third eye and heart chakras, but wearing it anywhere may be beneficial.
Care
If you have green amethyst (prasiolite) that was created synthetically through heat treatment, it must be handled with care. Protect it from direct sunlight and extreme heat as they can cause the color to fade. When you aren’t wearing your prasiolite jewelry, it is best to keep it stored in the dark — in a bag, cabinet or jewelry box. Do not store it near a heat source, such as a fireplace or a supply vent.
